Windrush Square came alive for the third annual Big Caribbean Lunch, drawing the largest crowd yet to honor the Windrush Generation. The celebration featured Caribbean street food, live reggae and steel pan music, and a powerful new exhibition - Windrush Untold Stories - with 20 storyboards sharing first-hand accounts of courage and resilience.
Hosted by Friends of Windrush Square with the Black Cultural Archives and Lambeth Council, the event treated Windrush elders to free lunch while the community grooved to classic reggae and soca. The festivities even spilled into the Black Cultural Archives building, where Home Office staff helped attendees with compensation and immigration queries. The day carried deep emotion - celebrating the pioneers' achievements while mourning beloved local elder Clovis "Sam the Wheels" Salmon OBE, the 98-year-old Windrush documentarian who passed just days before. Yet joy prevailed as Brixton's solidarity shone through every song and shared story.
